As a volunteer organization, New York City SHRM thrives because of the dedication of volunteers who directly impact our chapter’s growth and development.

New York City SHRM offers numerous opportunities for those who want to actively volunteer as well as to those who desire a future chapter leadership role. Depending upon your personal preference and desire, there are many ways to get involved and two general ways to get started.


 

Ways to become involved:

    Active Volunteer

    Communications/Social Media Committee

    o   Oversee a Social Media site:  LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube or Facebook

    o   Assist in posting weekly LinkedIn group announcements

    o   Facilitate a twitter chat

    o   Write a blog on a New York City SHRM event or Human Resources topic

    o   Tweet at a New York City SHRM event on behalf of the chapter or your own twitter handle

    Membership Committee

    o   Help us reach out with membership renewal reminders

    o   Help us reach out to SHRM at-large members and other potential members to encourage membership in New York City SHRM

    o   Help us plan membership networking events

    Programs Committee

    o   Help us source venues for New York City events

    o   Chair or assist in planning the Speaker Select Series of events

    o   Work with us to plan the Annual Management Conference

    o   Help us with potential speakers for events

    Sponsorship Committee

    o   Partner with the team to source potential event and corporate sponsors for New York City SHRM

     Website Committee

    o   Help to maintain and manage the Chapter’s website

    Holiday Party Committee

    o   Assist with planning and execution of the annual Holiday Party

    SHRM Foundation Committee

    o   Help us identify new meeting venues in the New York City area to hold SHRM Foundation fundraisers

    o   Partner with the team to source sponsors

    Special Interest Groups (SIG) and Chapter events

    o   Be the Social Media liaison for your SIG or Committee (live tweet or write a blog post)

    o   Meet/Greet and check in attendees at our various New York City SHRM events and conferences

    o   Offer your subject matter expertise for programs; be a panel member or speaker

Active Volunteers are those who are interested in getting involved in an on-going role or a one-time/one-event involvements.
Active Volunteers

Collaborative team player - Works well with others; able to interact and establish positive relationship at all events and meetings.

Passionate about HR - Interest in advancing the field and expanding outreach; enthusiastic about learning and sharing all facets of HR; motivates others.

Dedicated - We all have other commitments that take up time and energy; our active volunteers make New York City SHRM a priority!

Flexible & adaptable - Anticipates and manages change; able to shift priorities easily.  Demonstrates ability to work with an open mind, and willingness to learn new skills.

Results-oriented – Demonstrates ability to roll up sleeves and get things done.

Dependable - If you say you’ll show up, we can trust that you will. Maintains a consistently high level of professionalism.



Emerging leaders
are those interested in chapter leadership roles, ranging from committee or special interest groups (SIG) chairs/co-chairs to board director role, or a member of the chapter’s executive committee.

Emerging Leaders

Lead by example - Do you talk the talk AND walk the walk? Volunteer organizations need folks who know when and more importantly how to take action. Leading by example means creating a positive volunteer experience for all.

Strategic thinkerPromotes vision and mission of the organization; ensures all programs and activities are aligned with overarching goals of New York City SHRM.

Experience gaining consensus - Have you been successful leading a team before? Emerging leaders have the ability to find common ground and bring people together.

Comfortable presenting to a variety of audiences - Our members are diverse and come from all different backgrounds. Can you convey your message effectively to any population?

Able to obtain buy-in from stakeholders - Reputation and trust are a winning combination.

Takes initiative - Go-getters welcome! Volunteers readily; seeks increased responsibilities; knows when to ask for help and isn’t shy about getting clarification.

Project management expertise - Are you a good juggler, able to manage competing priorities and delegate effectively?  With leadership, comes responsibility.  

Experience coordinating logistics - Putting a successful program together requires immense organization and is no easy feat; experience managing logistics or planning events helps!
