Panel Discussion with HR Professionals

     

 

Learn about career paths within the field of HR such as HR generalist, compensation, benefits, employee relations, training, career development, organizational development, and diversity.

 

About the Panelists:

John McCaffrey is the Human Resources Director at UNITE HERE, an organization of working people, coming together to win dignity and higher standards in the hospitality industry and beyond. We represents workers throughout the U.S. and Canada who work in the hotel, gaming, food service, airport, textile, manufacturing, distribution, laundry, and transportation industries.

John brings to the table more than 30 years of human resources management and workforce development experience. His areas of expertise including, labor relations / employee relations, performance management, strategy and compliance, talent acquisition, learning & development, compensation and employment law. A results-focused human resources professional with a demonstrated track record of developing and implementing collaborative workplace environments, John has been an effective trainer, facilitator, negotiator and leader lauded many times over for his successes in leading teams to solve problems in diverse organizational conditions.

He holds the following certification: SPHR, SHRM-SCP, GBA and CEBS.

Dennis W. Sparks is a seasoned Human Resource executive whose career has spanned over twenty years in various industries, business models, and geographies. He has held senior positions with companies ranging in size from 150 to more than 10,000 employees, including government agencies, non-profit organizations, global corporations and private entities. A consistent theme has been business-focused generalist roles collaborating with all levels of management, from first-line supervisors and managers to the executive suite. He has extensive experience in areas of strategy, talent management, leadership coaching, employee development, talent acquisition, organizational development, team effectiveness, group facilitation and change management.

 

Dennis is presently the Chief Human Resource executive for CHE/Trinity – Saint Michael’s Medical Center Mercy in Newark, New Jersey; a community based health care system.  Prior to his current role, he held the position of CHRO with Mercy Philadelphia Medical Center, VP of HR for Lourdes Health System, and Regional Director of Human Resources with Aramark Corporation.

Dennis holds a MA in Human Resource Management with a concentration in Labor Law from National University, as well as a BA in Psychology and Sociology from Houston Baptist University in Houston, TX. 

 

Andrea Goldman is an attorney who has stepped outside of a purely legal role to follow her passion working as a Human Resource professional. Transitioning from practicing attorney to office manager, which involved the HR function, Andrea eventually became an HR consultant and currently is the Senior Director of Human Resources at ICD –Institute For Career Development, a non-profit that helps Veterans and individuals with disabilities through vocational rehabilitation and job search.

Andrea is a Board Member of New York City SHRM and Co-Chair of the Mentoring Committee. She has a degree in Sociology from the University at Albany and a Juris Doctor from the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University.

 

April Bernstein is the Human Resources Manager for Durr Mechanical Construction, a mechanical construction company specializing in power generation, water treatment and process piping.  In her current role, she leads the Human Resources and Risk Management functions for this mid-size construction company, which in 2017 employed more than 1,000 union and non-union employees.

April presents with more than 15 years of experience providing guidance and leadership to senior managers and C-level executives in the professional services, manufacturing and construction industries.  Her background includes planning, designing, managing and executing strategic human resources and risk management programs and initiatives.  April has extensive, high-level and hands-on experience in employee & organizational development, benefits administration, employee relations, compliance, policy development and implementation, and recruiting.

 

April started her undergraduate degree at New York University’s School of Education.  After an internship at a staffing agency during her first year of college, she decided to pursue a career in Human Resources.  She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Queens College as well as the following certifications: SPHR, SHRM-CSP, OSHA 30, and CRIS (Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist).  She is a member of Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and New York City SHRM.
